Professional Development Courses

All training offered by the CDPCBO is designed for career development professionals and integrates/aligns the former Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners with the competencies outlined in the New Canadian National Competency Framework and ProfileOur goal is to provide professional development that will elevate the skills and competencies of professionals delivering career development and employment preparation in the many forms throughout the province.

We have delivered training to the sector for 5 years in a face-to-face format. We support a wide range of practitioners and organizations across the province, having successfully trained over 400 individuals.  In 2020 training was redeveloped to be delivered online making it widely accessible regardless of geographic area or the limitations imposed by COVID19.

In participating in our training you will be learning from the best.  Our lead trainer and course developer, Gillian Johnston, has over 35 years’ experience in career development education spanning from program/course development to facilitation.  Gillian was also part of the development of the original Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development, served as a member of the National Certification Steering Committee responsible for the development of the New Canadian National Competency Framework and the team that created the New Code of Ethics for Career Development.

Career Development Theory (meets the requirements for CDP Certification)

Total hours for this course including pre, post and synchronous in class learning will be a minimum of 20 hours.  This synchronous portion of this course is 14 hours total over 2 days (the scheduled days may be back to back or spread over multiple weeks).

Course includes

  • Asynchronous work includes viewing Power Points, readings, and mini lecturettes to be completed before the synchronous sessions.  This portion may take 6 or more hours.
  • Synchronous portion will have all students on camera and includes a review of the pre class work, large and small group discussions, and activities to put theory into practice
  • An online review of all materials and the multiple choice exam taken during the final synchronous session
  • A post – training case study assignment

Registration is limited to a maximum of 12 participants for online courses.  Registration will be open approximately 4 to 8 weeks in advance.  In addition we welcome organizations to work with us to establish a session exclusively for their team or for a specific date convenient to them.  Sessions will have a minimum of 8 participants therefore if an organization wishes to host a session they may need to accept participants from the broader community.

Career Development Ethics (meets the requirements for CDP Certification)

Total hours for this course including pre, post and synchronous in-class learning meet the mandatory 10- hour training for CDP certification.  The synchronous portion of this course is 7 hours.

Course includes

  • Asynchronous work includes pre-course readings including the new National Code of Ethics for Career Development Professionals, listening/viewing pre-recorded mini lecturettes to be completed before the synchronous sessions.  This portion may take 4 or more hours.
  • Synchronous portion will have all students on camera and includes a review of the pre class work, large and small group discussions, and activities to apply an ethical decision-making model/strategy to ethical dilemmas provided through a variety of case studies
  • An online review of all materials, a True/False knowledge quiz and short-answer quiz based on the pre-course materials taken during the morning of the synchronous session and an open book exam taken at the end of the synchronous session

Needs Assessment

This course provides an overview of Employment Needs Assessment, skills, and processes. The goals of the pre-training and in-class/on-line sections of the course are to equip career development practitioners with knowledge of the purpose of employment needs assessment, the skills and processes used in needs assessment and practice in conducting an effective employment needs assessment. 

Total hours for this course including pre-course and synchronous in class learning will be a minimum of 11 hours.  This synchronous portion of this course is a total of 9 – 10.5 hours delivered over 1.5 day sessions. (the scheduled days may be back to back or spread over multiple days).

This includes

  • Asynchronous work includes pre-reading, listening/viewing pre-recorded mini lecturettes to be completed before the synchronous sessions.  This portion may take 2 – 4 or more hours.
  • The content of the pre-course work will not be taught during the synchronous classes; it will only be open for questions, discussion, and application.
  • Synchronous portion will have all students on camera and includes a review of the pre class work, large discussions, and Triad practice sessions
